About Domaine de Montbourgeau L'Étoile Vin Jaune

In the heart of Jura, the land harbours a secret that dates back millions of years. Beneath its vineyards lies the bed of an ancient sea, and the soils, composed of limestone filled with marine fossils, still whisper their tale. Among them are abundant small starfish, so prevalent that they gave this magical appellation its name: L’Étoile, which in French means “star.” This mineral and fossil origin is reflected in the wines with astonishing precision: they are luminous, tense, vibrant... wines with character and natural elegance.

Amidst this landscape of steep hills and old vines stands Nicole Deriaux, the soul of Domaine de Montbourgeau. Her story began with her grandfather back in the 1920s, and today Nicole keeps that heritage alive with a unique sensitivity. All her vineyards are within the L’Étoile appellation, although some wines also bear names as emblematic as Côtes du Jura, Crémant du Jura, or Arbois, depending on their character.

And if there is one wine that encapsulates the spirit of this project, it is her Vin Jaune. Montbourgeau L’Étoile Vin Jaune—crafted from 100% savagnin—is pure alchemy. Made from late-harvested grapes sourced from grey and blue marl soils rich in fossils.

After fermentation, the wine is transferred to a large 30-hectolitre cask where it rests for 6 months before beginning its true metamorphosis: an ageing under a veil in small 230-litre casks, unfilled, for no less than 7 years. During this time, a delicate layer of yeast forms, protecting the wine and imparting its distinctive identity.

When finally bottled—in the traditional 62 cl clavelines—the result is a wine beyond time. Intense, elegant, with an almost eternal energy. A wine that is more than drunk, it is contemplated, smelled, listened to. L’Étoile Vin Jaune is proof that some stars are not in the sky... but in the Jura.
